New course: Generative AI for Economic Analysis & Research*

I am delighted to announce an innovative new course that I’ll be teaching this Spring semester at Bahçeşehir University. After spending the past year and a half exploring and working with various generative AI tools, particularly Large Language Models (LLMs), I am thrilled to bring this cutting-edge knowledge into the economics curriculum.

This course represents a significant step forward in preparing students for the evolving landscape of economic research and analysis. In an era where AI tools are rapidly transforming how we work, students will gain hands-on experience with technologies that are becoming essential in our field.

What excites me most about this course is its unique meta-learning approach. Students won’t just learn about AI – they’ll actively use AI tools to enhance their learning experience, including using AI to assist in developing Python programming skills. This practical, project-based approach will prepare them for a future where the ability to effectively leverage AI tools will be a crucial professional advantage.

Through hands-on projects and real-world applications, students will:

  • Master web-based AI interfaces for economic analysis
  • Develop Python scripts to interact with AI APIs
  • Apply these tools to both micro and macroeconomic research
  • Learn to integrate AI capabilities with traditional economic methodologies
  • Build critical evaluation skills for AI applications in economics

I’m particularly enthusiastic about guiding students through this transformative learning experience. The course is designed to equip them with practical skills that will enhance their capabilities as economists while maintaining the crucial elements of critical thinking and analytical rigor.

Looking forward to embarking on this exciting journey with our students this Spring semester!
